Building the Beat: Dennis Reeves and Toronto’s Reggae Evolution

After arriving in Toronto in 1982, Dennis Reeves became a key figure in the city’s reggae scene, founding several influential bands, including The Inspiration—first rehearsed on Grandravine Drive—Future Shock, United Groove, and Hi Energy. He also held early rehearsals at Sid Love Joy, a venue located at 1539 Eglinton Avenue West, in what is now known as Little Jamaica. Through his work, Reeves laid the foundation for a career that helped shape Toronto’s reggae movement.
